A critical analysis of the prerequisites for developing automatic control of the jet milling process using acoustic feedback is presented. It is shown that known acoustic information features enable the identification of the operating modes of the milling unit, while relay–based control of material feed ensures that the chamber load is maintained near an optimal range. However, threshold–based decision–making fails to adequately account for the statistical variability of these features or the temporal characteristics of the information channel. A direction for future research is proposed, involving the construction of membership functions based on the statistical distributions of acoustic features and the development of a fuzzy automatic control system for throughput, where the control action on material feed is determined by the acoustic identification of the milling mode.
The analysis confirms that acoustic features from the milling zone can be utilized for the indirect estimation of chamber load and for establishing feedback within an automatic throughput control system for jet milling units. While previously developed threshold and relay–based algorithms allow for the adjustment of material feed, they do not account for the degree of uncertainty in mode identification—particularly where the statistical distributions of features overlap—nor do they consider the temporal limitations of the acoustic information channel.
